SERVICES FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES - services to support and strengthen families with information about health, safety, community resources, coping strategies, and healthy choices

WIC - Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children up to age 5 years, funded with state and federal funds that has been shown to improve the health of participants.
Who is Eligible?
- Pregnant, postpartum, or breastfeeding women
- Infants & children from birth to age 5 years
- Meet income guidelines (see below)
- Have a medical or nutritional need
What does WIC Provide?
- Quality foods such as milk, cheese, cereal, juice, eggs, peanut butter, infant formula
- Information on nutrition and health by professional staff
- Meet income guidelines (see below)
- Breastfeeding education and support
- Information about other health or social services programs

Income Guidelines (2006)
- Infants under age 2 years - 280% of Federal Poverty Guideline (ex. Family size of 2 - $36,972/year, Family size of 3 - $46,500/year)
- Pregnant Women - 275% of Federal Poverty Guideline (ex. Family of 2 - $36,312/year, Family of 3-$45,672/year)
- Children 2 - 5 years of age - 185% of Federal Poverty Guideline (ex. Family of 2 - $24,420/year, Family of 3 - $30,710/year)
Universal Contact Home Visits
- All new parents in the county are contacted and offered a free home visit by a public health nurse. The visit offers a health assessment of baby and mother, including weight & feeding checks, and information about child growth and development and community resources to help parents.
- Each baby is given a baby quilt and other gifts.
Follow Along Program
- Developmental screening program to help parents track their child's developmental milestones of their child from 4 months to age three.
- Parents may enroll their child in the Follow Along Program at the time of the Universal Contact home visit, at WIC clinics, Immunization clinics or by calling Brown County public Health.
Maternal & Child Health Visits
- Support and teaching about pregnancy and birth, prenatal care, infant feeding, child care, growth and development before and after baby is born.
Family Health Visits
- Support and teaching for families with children having health problems or parenting issues, with a focus on services to strengthen family relationships.
Pregnancy Testing, Counseling, Referral and follow up
- Pregnancy testing, counseling and referral for anyone, for a nominal fee
School Health
- Schools contract with Public health to provide school health nursing services to all public & private schools in the county. (New Ulm School District employs additional school health staff for each school building).
School Health Public Health Nurses
Services Include:
- Vision, hearing, scoliosis screening, re-screening, referral and follow-up for all students each year
- Disease prevention & control, including investigation of contagious illnesses in schools
- Immunization review and updates for all students
- Health education for students, parents and staff
- Consultation with staff, parents and health care professionals relating to the health of school age child
Early Intervention Services - Brown County Interdisciplinary Early Intervention Committee [IEIC]
- Assistance to families having special concerns regarding their child's growth and development, where a team of professionals including a public health nurse, teachers, social worker and other specialists will assess the child and set up a plan and coordinate services for the child.
Child & Teen Checkup Outreach
- Information and assistance for parents of children 6 months to 21 years of age and persons up to age 21, who are receiving for MN Health Care Programs assistance, to arrange for and obtain regular health checkups with their medical clinic/physician. Public Health staff will assist with transportation, interpreter services, or other help as needed, to ensure regular exams.
Family Planning Services
- Provides regular, CONFIDENTIAL, reproductive health exams, education and methods, for persons who do not have health insurance or who have high deductibles that prevent them from seeking regular exams, to prevent unplanned pregnancies.
What Services are Covered?
- Counseling and education
- Yearly physical exam and lab tests
- Follow-up visits when recommended
- Birth control supplies
- Pregnancy testing
- Sexually transmitted infection testing as needed
Who can use Family Planning Services?
- All persons with income below 200% of Federal Poverty Guidelines (ex. 1 person family - $18,620/year, family of 2, $24,980/year, family of 3, $31,340/year income, [add $6,360 to income for each additional person in the family])
- All persons under 18 years of age who are requesting confidential services
What Birth Control Methods are Available?
- Birth control pills
- Contraceptive injections (Depo Provera)
- Contraceptive patches
- Condoms
- Natural Family Planning education and materials

How do I pay for Services?
- An annual fee is requested from all eligible persons to help cover costs
- No one is refused services because they cannot pay
- Persons with health insurance or Medical Assistance to pay for exams and medications are asked to use those benefits and seek care privately for reproductive health services
- Persons under 18 years of age, who request confidential services will receive services through the Family Planning program
Services NOT Provided:
- Special prescription medications
- Cost for further treatment for abnormal results of tests or exams
- Additional visits for sexually transmitted infecting testing or treatment
- Pregnancy testing other than the initial visit
- AIDS testing and follow-up for partners
