FULL TIME PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE – WIC COORDINATOR

BASIC FUNCTIONS

Full Time Public Health Nurse – WIC Coordinator. Use professional nursing skills and knowledge, assess health and nutritional status and psychosocial needs of individuals and families in WIC clinics and other sites, and assists clients to achieve improved pregnancy outcomes and promote optimal maternal and child health for all eligible persons through the WIC program. Coordinates and develops the nutritional education plan, WIC Grant proposal, monthly financial and participant reports, and other documents and reports to support the WIC Program in Brown County Public Health.  Maintains close communication with Minnesota Department of Health WIC Consultants to keep the program and equipment up to date.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assesses and evaluates the health status and nutritional needs of women, infants and children, including measurements and hemoglobin tests, through the WIC Program. Within WIC Guidelines, Nurse Practice Act and agency policies, and based on assessment data, develop individual plans of care and nutritional education plan, select appropriate food packages, make referrals, and coordinates services for individuals and families with health risks and concerns. Develop the agency nutritional education plan, WIC Grant proposals, monthly financial and participant reports and other necessary documents, with consultation from the MN Dept. of Health WIC staff. Organize and coordinate the WIC program, including staffing, computer systems, equipment and supplies, and supervise staff working with the program, assuring compliance with WIC program guidelines. Provide Child and Teen Checkup outreach services to access health care and services, serve as a source of support and advocacy for needs of children and families.  Develop and maintain ongoing communication network, presentations, and referral resources to school classes, community groups, and individuals. Participate in the Maternal & Child Health Case Management Team, coordinate services and referrals. Documents all care and activities in appropriate documentation process. Participate in professional development to meet legal requirements for the WIC program and for registered nurse licensure. Organize and participate in community screening and evaluation activities.  Assist with other family health services including pregnancy testing, family planning intake, immunization clinics as needed.


QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate of NLN accredited nursing program with Bachelor of Science/Arts Degree in Nursing.  Current license to practice professional nursing in Minnesota.  Certification as a Public Health Nurse in Minnesota.  4 years experience as a licensed Registered Nurse in a clinical or Public Health setting, with focus on parent/maternal and child health obstetrics or pediatrics.  Independent decision-making abilities.  Sound process skills of nursing assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.  Good oral and written communication skills. Experience with program coordination, organization, and supervision of staff and or programs, and community collaboration skills.  Ability to interpret and demonstrate core public health principles and functions to the community and other professionals. Computer skills are preferred.

COMPMENSATION
