Attorney Department Policies and Documents

From Chuck Hanson, Brown County Attorney
Duties & Responsibilities of the Brown County Attorney

As the Brown County Attorney, my office is responsible for the prosecution of all felony crimes committed by adults in the county as well as gross misdemeanor and some misdemeanor crimes in the townships.  My office also prosecutes all juveniles who commit crimes regardless of the location or seriousness of the offense.  The responsibility of prosecution includes working closely with law enforcement, human services and probation to provide support and protection to all the residents of Brown County.

Legal Adviser to the County Board & Every County Department

I also serve as the legal adviser for the Board of Commissioners as well as each of the County Departments.  I represent the county in all civil litigation in which the county has no insurance coverage.

Legal Representative of Human Services Department

In addition to representing all of the other county departments, a very large part of my office time involves representing Human Services in numerous legal matters including the following:

  • Actions to protect abused and neglected children and vulnerable adults
  • Actions to involuntarily commit for treatment people who are mentally ill, chemically dependent or severely mentally challenged
  • Actions to obtain and enforce child support obligations
  • Actions to establish the paternity of a child

Our Goal

My goal as the Brown County Attorney is to ensure that Brown County remains a safe and secure place to live, work, and not only build a family, but grow our community.
