News

  • The License Bureau is open and all services are available for in-person transactions.
  • The cut-off time for processing driver’s license/ID renewals and title transactions is 4:00 p.m.
  • The US Dept. of Homeland deadline for requirement of the Real ID, Enhanced DL or Passport to board a domestic flight has been extended to May 7, 2025.

The Brown County License Bureau processes Standard, REAL, Enhanced driver’s licenses and State ID cards.

Hours: Monday–Friday from 8am to 4pm

New to Minnesota?

If you are new to the State of Minnesota, you are required to take a written test to obtain your Minnesota license.  New residents have 60 days after moving to the state to obtain a Minnesota driver's license.

The below links will take you to the corresponding MN State Driver and Vehicle Services Website.

Vehicle registration can be renewed in-person, through the drop-box at the License Bureau or mailed to 1900 North Franklin Street, New Ulm, MN 56073.

  • Registration tabs need to be purchased by the last day of the month displayed on your license plate.
  • Insurance information for motor vehicles must be provided at the time of registration per Minnesota State Statute 169.798 Subd. 4. Proof of insurance includes the insurance company name, policy number and policy expiration date.
  • You must be the registered owner of a vehicle to purchase tabs. You may authorize another person to purchase tabs for your vehicle by providing your renewal notice to them or signing an authorization form.
  • The State of Minnesota requires license plate replacement every 7 years. You will notice an additional fee on your renewal notice when your vehicle is due for new plates.
  • Keep a portion of your money in your county! The filing fee for vehicle registration renewals is kept in the county if you process your renewal through our office.

Road & Written Tests

New Residents

  • New Residents have 60 days after moving to the state to obtain a Minnesota Driver's License
  • Must pass the Minnesota State written test

CDL & Motorcycle

  • CDL & Motorcycle knowledge tests are offered Thursdays from 10am to 11:15am in New Ulm
  • These test are on a walk-in basis and do not require an appointment

The Brown County License Bureau processes title transfers Monday-Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

MN State DVS Vehicle Title Transfer Services

  • When someone moves to Minnesota, they must submit an out-of- state title or current registration if the title is unavailable. New residents have 60 days after moving to the state to obtain Minnesota license plates.
  • Applicants must provide driver's license or state-issued identification card.
  • If there is a lien against the vehicle, the owner must provide the name and complete address of the lender, as well as the date of the loan.
  • The owner's signature is required on the Minnesota title application.
  • All sellers must sign a title.
  • New owners have 10 days to transfer a title.

The License Bureau offers contactless service options for certain transactions:

  • Passenger class vehicle renewals (tabs)
  • CDL medical certificates
  • Disability certificate renewals
  • Title transfers
  • Other deputy registrar services

Services will still to be offered through mail or drop-box located on the Franklin Street side of the License Bureau parking lot. All transactions will be processed and returned via mail.
