License Bureau


The License Bureau is open and all services are available for in-person transactions. For added convenience we also offer some date/time specific appointments and contactless service by drop box or mail – 1900 N Franklin St, New Ulm, MN 56073.
Read below for more information on the different ways we are serving customers or for tips and instructions on booking.



Tab Renewal/DNR Quick Line

We have quick lines for tab renewal and DNR transactions. You may walk in or use the No Wait Inside booking system to book into the Tab/Renewal/DNR Quick Line by clicking on the BOOK AN APPOINTMENT icon above. We cannot save spots so please make sure you are at the license bureau BEFORE it is your turn to be served.

Virtual Waiting Line – daily first come, first serve queue

To avoid having customers stand in a physical line, we are using a virtual queue. This gives customers a more enjoyable waiting experience by knowing how many people are currently in line, and allows you to wait in the comfort of your vehicle or in limited seating inside.

Walk-Ins are welcome. However, to better manage your time we suggest you use the No Wait Inside system to book into the Virtual Waiting Line when you are ready to come to the License Bureau by clicking on the BOOK AN APPOINTMENT icon above. This allows you to see how many people are currently in the queue so you can time when you need to physically be at the license bureau. We cannot save spots so please make sure you are at the license bureau BEFORE it is your turn to be served.

Date/Time Specific Appointment

We do have a limited number of date/time specific appointments each day for renewals or upgrades of Real ID or Enhanced Driver’s License/IDs, reinstatements, and vehicle services such as impounds, increase/decrease weight, special plate applications, or for complex or multiple transactions.

Appointments can be booked up to 14 days in advance by clicking on BOOK AN APPOINTMENT icon. Bookings show unavailable after 14 days but these future dates will be made available on each new day.

Appointments are limited to 20 minutes, so it is important that you bring all required documents with you to the appointment.
If you cannot keep your appointed time, please call (507) 359-5432 to cancel as there are a limited number of date/time specific appointments available daily.

Contactless Service Options

Passenger class vehicle renewals (tabs), CDL medical certificates, disability certificate renewals, title transfers, and other deputy registrar services will continue to be offered through mail or drop box located in the entryway of the lobby. All transactions will be processed and returned via mail.

Tips/Instructions for Booking

  • If you are experiencing calendar problems using Internet Explorer, please use Google Chrome, Firefox, or Edge web browser when booking an appointment.
  • If all dates are ‘X’ out on the calendar, it means that all date/time specific appointments are booked for the next 14 days.  Additional appointments open up each day but are usually booked by early morning, so keep trying if this is the type of appointment you prefer.
  • Virtual Waiting Line appointments cannot be booked in advance as they are same-day appointments.  If that option is not available in the booking app it means ALL appointments for that day are booked due to the number of people in queue.  The later in the day, the more likely that will be the case.
  • After you click on the book appointment link you will need to provide the following information:
  • Select Virtual Waiting Line or Date/Specific Appointment from the service requested dropdown
  • Check the service(s) you need
  • Type in your First and Last Name
  • Enter you cell phone number – we will use this number to let you know when we are ready to serve you
  • Check the box to agree to text message terms
  • Click submit

After booking your appointment, you will receive a text message and/or phone call with further instructions, including a link to click when you arrive at the license bureau. For all appointments, please wait in your car until you are notified that we are ready for you inside.

If you are making an appointment for a driver’s license or ID, please complete the pre-application online prior to your appointment. You'll save time and learn what documents to bring with you to your appointment based on the license type you plan to get.

For driver’s licenses, IDs, or title transactions, we ask that you please arrive no later than 4:00 pm with all necessary documents to allow time to complete these complex transactions prior to our closing time
