Appointment Status:
License Bureau services are available in-person by appointment only or through contactless service by drop box or mail – 1900 N Franklin St, New Ulm, MN 56073.

There are two different types of appointments available to book, Date/Time Specific Appointments and Virtual Waiting Line. Please see below for more information on each type of appointment.

Tips for Booking an Appointment:

  • If you are experiencing calendar problems using Internet Explorer, please use Google Chrome, Firefox, or Edge web browser when booking an appointment.
  • If all dates are ‘X’ out on the calendar, it means that all date/time specific appointments are booked for the next 14 days.  Additional appointments open up each day but are usually booked by early morning, so keep trying if this is the type of appointment you prefer.
  • Virtual Waiting Line appointments cannot be booked in advance as they are same-day appointments.  If that option is not available in the booking app it means ALL appointments for that day are booked due to the number of people in queue.  The later in the day, the more likely that will be the case.
  • After you click on the book appointment link you will need to provide the following information:

First and Last Name
Phone number - We will use this number to let you know when you can come into the building.
Pick Location Dropdown select “Brown County License Bureau”. 
Service Request – choose whether you would like a “Virtual Waiting Line” or “Date/Time Specific Appointment”.  If you choose Date/Time Specific Appointment  it will default to the first date with availability.  To see other dates, click on the calendar icon. Click on the Select Time Slot to choose an appointment time.
Click the box to agree to the appointment and hit submit.

After booking your appointment, you will receive a text message and/or phone call with further instructions, including a link to click on when you arrive at the license bureau. For all appointments, please wait in your car until you are notified that we are ready for you inside.

If you are making an appointment for a driver’s license or ID, please complete the pre-application online prior to your appointment. You'll save time and learn what documents to bring with you to your appointment based on the license type you plan to get.

If you do not have a cell phone or are unable to receive text messages, please call (507) 359-5432 to book your appointments.

Virtual Waiting Line – first come, first serve basis (queued)

  • For all deputy registrar services, including driver’s licenses and IDs, title transfers, registration renewals, DNR licenses and vehicle registrations, CDL medical certificates, and disability applications
  • These are same day appointments. You do not have to go to the license bureau to book a virtual waiting line appointment. You will receive a text message that shows where you are in the queue so you can plan accordingly when to arrive at the License Bureau.
  • Only (1) customer is allowed in at a time, except if a parent signature is needed
  • Appointments must be completed by 4:15 p.m. We will try our best to complete all appointments booked each day, therefore you may find that the virtual waiting line option is unavailable

Date/Time Specific Appointment

  • Preferred method for renewals or upgrades of Real ID or Enhanced Driver’s License/IDs, reinstatements, and vehicle services such as impounds, increase/decrease weight, special plate applications, or for complex or multiple transactions Appointments can be booked online up to 14 days in advanced
  • Only (1) customer is allowed in at a time, except if a parent signature is needed
  • Appointments are limited to 20 minutes, so it is important that you bring all required documents with you to the appointment. Digital documents are not accepted and we are unable to print them off.

Contactless Service Options

Passenger class vehicle renewals (tabs), CDL medical certificates, disability certificate renewals, title transfers, and other deputy registrar services will continue to be offered through mail or drop box located in the entryway of the lobby. All transactions will be processed and returned via mail.

Written Knowledge and Road Tests

For driver’s licenses, IDs, or title transactions, we ask that you please arrive no later than 4:00 pm with all necessary documents to allow time to complete these complex transactions prior to our closing time
